Richard Oglesby is standing with hat in hand and coat over his arm, looking out over Diversey Harbor from the crest of a hill skirted by Cannon Dr. After fighting in the Civil War, Olgesby resigned from the army to run for governor on the Union ticket. He was reelected governor three times and was appointed U.S. senator for one term in 1873.
